VISIT OF CPEC PROJECTS, GWADAR BY URBAN DEVELOPMENT DIVISION, COE-CPEC

1369

Pakistan and China are promoting active development cooperation through implementation of various projects under CPEC. The announcement of CPEC in 2013 which established a ‘1+4’ cooperation structure (CPEC + Gwadar port; energy; transport and infrastructure; and industrial cooperation/establishment of special economic zones) has endowed Gwadar with unparalleled opportunities for new growth. Gwadar, situated on an isthmus, connects the southwestern coast of Pakistan with the Persian Gulf and serves as an ideal location to build an international port with its perfect geographical conditions and the adjacency to the primary international energy transport route. Considering the importance of Gwadar in CPEC portfolio and to answer pertinent research questions raised on the development of Gwadar, A field visit of CPEC development projects in Gwadar as well as meetings with the concerned stakeholders was conducted by Urban Development Division of COE-CPEC. The official delegation from CoE-CPEC consisting of Dr. Saleem Janjua, Head of Policy and his team carried out a meeting with the relevant authorities and discussed the construction and operation of various projects under CPEC framework at Gwadar. Field visit of CPEC projects was also done to collect the first hand information and spot the progress of the various projects. In a nutshell, it can be summarized that Gwadar enjoys the locational benefit, suitable port development conditions, and a rich fishery resource. However, Gwadar also faces some challenges as well, include the issue of weak infrastructure, lack of industrial impetus, water crisis, and administrative fragmentation. CPEC has proved to be a game changer for the region as number of development projects are being planned and executed and the successful completion of these projects will directly benefit the local community and thus ensure sustainable development in the region.
