Meeting of Chinese Expert Group on Socio-Economic Development at CoE CPEC

 CPEC, Centre of Excellence, China Pakistan, Pak-china friendship, COE CPEC, China Pakistan Economic CorridorA delegation of Chinese Expert Group on Socio-Economic Development headed by Mr. Du Zhenli, Director General, China International Electronic Commerce Center (CIECC), along with 12 members visited the Centre of Excellence for China Pakistan Economic Corridor on 28th February 2019.

The purpose of the meeting was to get updates from the CPEC centre of excellence on the research being carried out and further discuss the six areas identified in for the uplift of the socio-economic condition of the people.  These areas decided and agreed upon in JWG and JCC includes agriculture, poverty alleviation, water supply, education, health and vocational training.

Dr. Abdul Jalil, Executive Director CoE CPEC welcome the delegation and shared about various activities and achievements of CoE-CPEC. To cater the research needs for CPEC, Centre has initiated CPEC Quarterly magazine, working paper series, policy paper and case study series.

Prof. Dr. Amir Khan, Head of Policy Division Socio-Economic impacts of CPEC, presented his research archives including Poverty Mapping in Pakistan, Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index and CPEC intervention to address poverty issues.

Main focus of discussion was how to identify the projects, to agree on related area and the implementation mechanism in the district level to make these project demand driven and to make them sustainable and replicable. It was discussed that priority should be given to districts along CPEC routes and for the subject matter Provincial Government to be asked for identification of districts.

Dr. Amir Khan also shared about Socio-Economic Challenges and Target of the Government of Pakistan:

  • Target is to achieve 70% literacy rate
  • 6% of people are homeless, another 12% living in rented houses with overcrowded situation.
  • The target is to provide affordable housing to 5 million housing units to both homeless and rented people of Pakistan.
  • Target is to provide affordable healthcare to all people
  • Reduce maternal mortality ratio from 178 to less than 100 per 100,000, through Healthcare.
  • 36% population of Pakistan has access to clean drinking water. Target is to reach at least 60% population to have clean water by setting up desalination plants and other water purification technologies in the coastal regions Sindh and Baluchistan.
  • Employment for all and Health for all.

At the end of briefing a comprehensive model for intervention to Improve Socio-Economic Conditions was also presented by Dr. Amir Khan.

 CPEC, Centre of Excellence, China Pakistan, Pak-china friendship, COE CPEC, China Pakistan Economic CorridorDelegation appreciated the sitting government initiatives on Health and Education and applauded efforts of CoE CPEC team for providing such in-depth information on Socio Economic status of Pakistan and possible remedies.

The overall meeting proved to be a very productive activity. The delegation requested for support of Centre at later stages as well. Whereas the leadership of CoE CPEC is looking forward upon the long-term remedies which can serve for the betterment of Pakistan, along with the neighboring countries.
