Round Table Conference on “Pakistan’s Halal Meat Export: Prospects, Challenges and Effective Policy Measures” held on 4th May, 2019

A Round Table Conference (RTC) was organized by Trade & Industry Research Division of Centre of Excellence for CPEC in collaboration with the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) and Halal Awareness & Research Council (HARC) on May 4 at IoBM Karachi. Stakeholders in the meat industry and public officials were invited to express their opinion and provide valuable inputs. Moreover, queries regarding halal meat export were raised and addressed the during the session

In RTC, officers from CoE, IoBM, HARC, Ministry of National Food Security and Research, different meat processor and exporters such as K &Ns participated and presented on valuable topics. According to the subject and title of the RTC the focus of presenters was on policy initiative/regulatory framework to boost Pakistan’s halal meat export, standards and certifications of halal meat exports, role of cold supply chain and requirements of meat industry, issues in animal health, nutrition and barriers in breeding farms and feeds: current status and future strategies, prospects & challenges to meat exports and demand of Chinese halal meat importers

Chief guests Dr. Amanat Ali Jalbani, Dean (IOBM) and Mr. Afaq Shamsi (Vice President, Halal Awareness & Research Council) also illuminated the event with their keynote speech. Dr. Johar Ali, Member Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) gave his remarks about opportunities and challenges for Pakistan’s halal meat industry and provided policy suggestions for initiatives to remove bottlenecks in Meat Exports. Dr. Syed Noman Ali (Senior Veterinary Officer Livestock Department, Government of Sindh) spoke on the issues of animal health, nutrition and barriers in breeding farms and feeds.

The session was concluded by Dr. Liaqat Ali Shah (Policy Head Trade & Industry, CoE-CPEC) and summed up all the suggestions, policy measures and future strategies to boost meat export to China, Middle East and European Union.
